For the last fifteen plus years the Inner Wheel Club of East Coast Albany Bays and the Rotary Club of East Coast Bays have been involved in a joint maternity project for the North Shore Hospital and more recently for the Waitakere Hospital as well.

“Baby bags” have been put together for distribution by social workers at the hospitals to help mothers in need with new babies. These bags contain disposable nappies, baby wipes, soap, flannel, hooded towel, singlet, body suit, jacket, t-shirt, socks, polar blanket and hand-knitted jacket, hat, booties and a teddy. The Inner Wheel and Rotary clubs have been assisted with the knitting by various Spinning & Weaving groups as well as their own members.

In addition to this joint project with Rotary, the Inner Wheel Club of East Coast Albany Bays is also involved in knitting Twiddlemitts for dementia patients at North Shore Hospital which are distributed through the Well Foundation. These hand knitted ‘mitts’ have a variety of items sewn onto both the inside and outside to give patients a sensory and calming experience.
